Where Are You, Jesus?

Thanks to some behind-the-scenes footage from The Chosen series, there are some funny pictures of the actor who plays Jesus holding coffee, an iPhone, or a water bottle—laughing and joking with the cast and crew. These images have been floating around the internet lately with playful captions about how Jesus might interact with us in today’s world, and I’ve loved the perspective. What do you think He’d be like?

While Jesus certainly isn’t walking around with an iPhone, He exists outside of space and time. He is with us today, in 2025, even though we can’t see Him. I often think about this, especially when I’m going through something hard. Sometimes, I pray this simple prayer:

"Jesus, I know You’re with me. Show me in my mind’s eye how You’d be interacting with me right now if I could see You in person."

In these moments, I am reminded of His great love for me in every season—my successes, my failures, my shortcomings, and my grief.

Sometimes I imagine how He would interact with me in the present moment, but I also ask Him what He would have been up to during past experiences. For example, I was bullied as a child and often sat by myself on the playground. Even now, I sometimes wonder why I had to go through that. But one day, as I was talking to Jesus about it, an image came to mind—I saw that same playground, but this time, Jesus walked up and sat down right next to me. That moment reminded me that Jesus cares about every detail of our lives. He loves each of us personally, and we can truly take everything to Him.

If you could imagine Jesus in your current circumstances today, what would He be doing?

Imagining how He would interact with us in our daily lives is a unique way to reflect on His character. But how do we know we’re getting it right? It’s easy to assume He would be mad at us for making mistakes or distant when we fall short. However, we can see who He truly is by reading the Word of God:

  • Jesus spent time with outcasts and sinners. (Matthew 9:10-17, Mark 2:15-17, Luke 5:29-32)

  • Jesus showed righteous anger toward hypocritical religious practices—from the tables in the temple to the Pharisees. (Matthew 21:12-13, John 2:15-17, Matthew 23:13, 15, 23)

  • Jesus was never too busy for interruptions. (Matthew 9:18-26)

  • While Jesus didn’t mind interruptions, He also prioritized solitude and rest for Himself and His followers, making sure their physical needs were met. (Mark 6:30-44, Matthew 14:23)

  • Jesus was fearless in the face of surrounding storms. (Matthew 8:23-27, Mark 4:35-41, Luke 8:22-25)

  • Jesus reminded us that we shouldn’t worry either! (Matthew 6:24-34)

  • Jesus is the ultimate example of forgiveness, sacrifice, and love. (John 3:16-17, Romans 5:7-8)

What else comes to mind about the character of Jesus as you reflect on what is written about Him? Knowing this, how can you envision Him in your current circumstances?

Friend, today I pray that you would know your Savior loves you and that He is near—no matter what you are going through.

“The Lord is slow to anger and filled with unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion…”
Numbers 14:18a NLT

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”
Psalm 34:18 NLT
